Digesters, gas upgrading skids and combustion trains commissioned to first export

Commissioning software for biogas and biomass plants where digesters, gas upgrading skids and combustion or CHP trains each need their own proving run before the plant can export power or gas.

A biogas or biomass plant runs three distinct processes in sequence: anaerobic digestion or fuel handling and combustion, gas upgrading or flue gas treatment, and power generation or gas injection to the grid. Deskely holds every digester, skid and combustion asset in one register with the process safety, gas quality and export gates built in.

    The problem

A digester yard, a gas upgrading skid and a CHP engine hall are three separate commissioning sequences, and export cannot start until all three prove out in the right order.

Anaerobic digesters or fuel handling systems, gas upgrading or flue gas treatment skids, and CHP engines or boilers are commissioned in sequence by different specialist vendors, each stage depending on the one before it actually working.

When digester biology commissioning, gas quality test results and CHP load test data sit in separate vendor reports, the site cannot answer the operator's question before first export: is the gas or steam actually within spec for the equipment downstream of it.

Deskely tags every digester, skid and combustion asset individually with its own process gate, so first-export readiness is derived from signed process data instead of a vendor's assurance that the plant 'ran fine yesterday'.

    Setting up the register

Digesters, upgrading skids and combustion trains are tagged assets with their own process test sequence.

P&IDs, digester tank layouts and gas train drawings are parsed into a reviewed register, so every digester, gas upgrading skid, CHP engine and flare carries its design data and OEM data sheet from day one.

Digester commissioning templates covering biology start-up and gas production ramp-up, gas upgrading skid test templates covering methane content and siloxane removal, and CHP or boiler commissioning templates are each defined once and instantiated per unit.

Flare stack and gas safety system commissioning is held as its own record set, distinct from process commissioning, because it typically has to be proven and available before the digester is allowed to produce gas at all.

    Execution

Digester start-up, gas upgrading and CHP commissioning are proven in sequence, each gating the next.

Digester commissioning tracks biology start-up through to stable gas production, with gas composition sampled and logged against the digester before the gas is routed to the upgrading skid or combustion train.

Gas upgrading skids are tested for methane content, siloxane and hydrogen sulphide removal against the offtake specification, while CHP engines or boilers are load tested in stages, with emissions and efficiency data captured against OEM acceptance bands.

Findings from any stage — a digester biology upset, an off-spec upgrading skid result, a CHP trip on load — are logged against the specific asset with an owner, so first export is not risked on the strength of a single clean run.

First export and handover to operations

First export is declared from a proven process chain, not from a description of what the plant did on its best day of testing.

Digester commissioning records, gas quality test data and CHP or boiler load test reports all export from the same register, so the first-export evidence pack for the grid or gas network operator is built from continuous process data.

The handover pack for the operations team includes as-built P&IDs, digester start-up procedures and CHP commissioning baselines, giving the operating team the same process history the commissioning team relied on to declare readiness.

Every signature carries a name, role and timestamp, which is what the grid or gas network operator and the asset owner's offtake agreement will ask for before first export is accepted as commissioned rather than trial running.

    The dossier

Gas quality, engine emissions and digestate are audited by different parts of the regulator, so each stays its own record.

A plant can be running perfectly on gas quality and still be in breach of its environmental permit on scrubber media life or digestate nutrient limits. The dossier separates process commissioning, emissions testing and permit compliance evidence so each is checked against the record it belongs to.

    How it runs

From digester start-up to first export.

Biogas and biomass programmes reward a register that treats digestion, upgrading and combustion as a sequence of dependent gates, because a shortcut in gas quality testing shows up as damage in the CHP engine, not as a paperwork gap.

    1. 01

      Model the process chain

Digesters, gas upgrading skids, CHP engines and flare modelled as assets in their commissioning sequence.

    2. 02

Parse P&IDs and gas train data

Process diagrams, digester layouts and gas train drawings drafted into a reviewed register with design data attached.

    3. 03

      Template each process stage
