    The problem

    The testing window is three hours, and it does not move because a record was missed.

    New baggage handling conveyors, screening equipment and security systems are commissioned in the gaps between live operations — overnight, during off-peak windows, or in zones sealed off from passengers.

    If pre-functional checks are not complete before that window opens, the window is wasted, and the next one might be days away.

    Setting up the register

    Conveyors, scanners and PLCs are tagged assets tied to a phase and a zone.

    Baggage handling system layouts, security equipment schedules and control system architecture diagrams are parsed into a register that ties every conveyor section, scanner and PLC to the phase and zone it belongs to.

    Because live and non-live areas are modelled separately, work in a sealed construction zone can proceed on its own record set without touching systems still serving passengers.

    Interfaces between the new baggage system and existing airport systems — flight information, security, fire — are held as their own tested link rather than assumed compatible.

    Integration testing

    Integrated systems tests run against a live building, not a green field.

    Functional and integration testing between the baggage handling system, security screening, fire alarm cause-and-effect and BMS is recorded per interface, with the possession window and any live-side constraint noted against the test.

    Overnight and phased test results are captured on-site on tablets, so evidence from a three-hour window at 2am is complete and signed before the next shift starts, not reconstructed afterwards.

    Punch raised during a possession is categorised immediately as blocking the next phase or carriable into it, which is what keeps a tight programme moving.

    Operational readiness

    Airport operations sign off a system they will run under regulatory scrutiny.

    Operational readiness and transfer to airport operations depends on complete, signed evidence for every interface and every zone, especially where a regulator has to be satisfied before a system goes live.

    Because the dossier builds phase by phase, the handover pack for zone one does not need zone three to be finished, which matches how terminals are actually brought into service.

    Named sign-off with timestamps is what supports both the internal operational readiness board and any external regulatory or security authority review.

    Smoke control and stair pressurisation

    An escape stair has to stay clear of smoke under a fire scenario tested against the terminal's actual egress model, not a generic standard.

    Terminal buildings rely on stair and lobby pressurisation systems, smoke clearance dampers and make-up air paths to keep escape routes tenable during a fire event, and the fire engineer's egress strategy for a terminal is bespoke to its geometry, so the pressurisation test has to prove the specific scenario modelled, not a generic pass/fail.

    These tests are usually run in coordination with the fire and rescue service and the airport's own fire safety team, and because they interact with active smoke dampers and AHUs already carrying passenger load elsewhere in the building, they have to be scheduled inside the same possession windows as other live-side testing.
