Landfall, onshore cable and point of connection

Completions software for the onshore scope that decides whether the wind farm can export at all.

Landfall, onshore cable route, the onshore substation and the point of connection are usually delivered by different contractors against a grid connection date that cannot move. Deskely holds the whole onshore chain in one register with the connection conditions as gates.

    The problem

Four contractors, one connection date, and one set of conditions to satisfy.

Civils, cable installation, substation build and HV commissioning each run to their own programme, and the transmission operator has conditions that apply across all of them.

When the connection date approaches, the question is not who is behind — it is which specific condition is unevidenced. That answer usually lives in four different reporting formats.

Deskely puts the onshore chain in one register so the connection conditions can be tracked as prerequisites rather than as a checklist someone owns in a document.

    Setting up the register

Landfall, route and substation belong to one continuous scope.

Transition joint bays, duct sections, link boxes, the substation bays, transformers, earthing grid, protection and SCADA are modelled as tagged assets on one route from the sea to the grid.

Cable schedules, SLDs and route drawings are parsed into that register so nothing is retyped and every asset keeps its drawing reference.

The result is a scope that can be reported end to end rather than as three unrelated packages.

    Compliance testing

Grid code evidence is not paperwork — it is the permission to export.

Protection coordination, earthing measurements, SCADA signal lists, metering accuracy and compliance test results all feed the connection agreement conditions.

Each is held as a signed record against the asset it belongs to, with the condition it satisfies referenced, so the compliance pack builds itself as the work is done.

When the operator asks for evidence against a specific condition, the answer is a filtered view rather than a document search.

    Energisation

Energisation is granted against evidence, and withdrawn against gaps.

The energisation certificate is gated on earthing, protection, interlocks, safety systems and any outstanding Category A punch on the affected bays.

Deskely will not issue while those are open, and shows exactly which record or item is holding the gate.

Once energised, the same evidence becomes the baseline for the operations team and for any future modification.

    The grid code compliance dossier

The connection is granted on a dossier, and the transmission operator reads it long after the contractors have left.

Reactive capability demonstrated across the P-Q envelope, fault ride-through evidence, power quality and harmonics measurement, frequency and voltage control response, protection coordination and the SCADA points list proven end to end with the control centre: each is a compliance item with an owner and a deadline.

Compliance evidence is generated across energisation, first export and a monitoring period that can run months past practical completion, and it is usually assembled by whoever is left rather than by whoever ran the test.

Tracking compliance items as records against the connection asset means the dossier builds as the tests are witnessed, and the final submission to the transmission operator is an export rather than a hunt through three contractors' archives.

    The connection dossier

The transmission operator reads one file, built from records that were never generated by the same contractor.

From landfall to the point of connection, four organisations each hand over a slice of evidence. Deskely gathers it against one asset chain, so the connection agreement's conditions can be checked off against signed records instead of a document search under deadline.

Transformer and switchgear bolt torque record

Structural and busbar connections in the substation were made up to specification during erection.

    During substation electromechanical assembly.

    Cable termination and jointing record

Onshore export cable and duct sections were jointed and terminated to the cable schedule at each transition joint bay.

Along the onshore cable route, before backfill and reinstatement.

VLF and HV withstand test result

Cable and switchgear insulation withstands the specified test voltage ahead of first energisation.

Before the substation is permitted to energise.

Earthing and protection coordination test record

Earth grid resistance and protection relay settings meet the design and the connection agreement's requirements.

During substation commissioning, ahead of the compliance test programme.

SCADA point-to-point verification with the control centre

Every signal required by the connection agreement reaches the transmission operator's control room correctly mapped.

During commissioning, before energisation is requested.

Substation taking-over certificate with punch carried at takeover

All civil, cable and HV commissioning records are signed, with any remaining Category B punch listed against an owner ahead of energisation.

At handover of the substation from contractor to owner.

    How it runs

From duct sections to an energised point of connection.

Grid connection scopes are date-driven and condition-driven. Structuring the register around the conditions is what keeps the last three months calm.

    1. 01

      Model the onshore route

Landfall, transition joint bays, duct sections, link boxes and the substation as one tagged chain.

    2. 02

      Map the connection conditions

Each condition of the connection agreement tied to the records that will evidence it.

    3. 03

      Capture civil and cable evidence

Duct installation, cable pulling, jointing and link box records signed against the section.

    4. 04

      Commission the substation

Bay by bay: transformer, protection, earthing, SCADA and metering with signed site test records.

    5. 05

      Run compliance testing

Protection coordination, earthing measurement and compliance tests recorded against the assets they prove.

    6. 06

      Issue energisation

The certificate issues only when every prerequisite is signed and blocking punch is cleared.
