Onshore turbines, collector systems and BESS

Commissioning software for onshore wind farms where the grid date arrives before the paperwork does.

Onshore wind has the same repeated record set as offshore, spread across a site with civils, collector cabling, a substation and increasingly a battery system. Deskely templates the turbine record set and gates energisation on evidence.

    The problem

Small teams, spread sites and a grid date that will not move.

Onshore projects run leaner than offshore, which usually means one completions coordinator holding several trackers and a folder of scanned checksheets.

The scope is still repetitive — the same turbine record set across every position — and still gated by an energisation date set by someone else.

Deskely gives a small team the same structure a large offshore project gets, without a document controller to run it.

    Setting up the register

Turbines, collector circuits and the substation are one register, not three trackers.

Each turbine position carries its foundation, tower, nacelle, blades and LV scope. Collector circuits link positions to the substation, and the substation is broken into its own subsystems.

Where the project includes a battery system or a met mast, they join the same register rather than being tracked separately.

Readiness rolls up per position, per circuit and per site.

    Execution on site

Records signed at the tower base, including where there is no coverage.

Sites are rural and coverage is unreliable, so tablet execution has to work offline and sync later — the same requirement as offshore, for a different reason.

Punch is raised at the position with photos, categorised by whether it blocks energisation.

The commissioning engineer sees which positions are genuinely ready before scheduling a walkdown.

    Energisation and takeover

Positions energise as circuits, and hand over one at a time.

Circuit energisation depends on cable testing, protection and earthing evidence, and turbine takeover depends on the full commissioning set.

Deskely enforces both from the records, so partial energisation of a completed circuit is a decision made on evidence.

The takeover pack exports per position for the owner and the O&M provider.

    Consent conditions and site reinstatement

An onshore site is handed back to more than the owner, so planning and environmental obligations close alongside the technical records.

Planning consent brings conditions that survive construction: noise limits at named receptors, shadow flicker mitigation configured in the turbine controller, bat and bird curtailment regimes, habitat management commitments, and construction traffic and access track obligations agreed with the highway authority.

Each condition has a discharging authority and a piece of evidence behind it, and each is usually held by a different consultant to the one holding the commissioning records.

Keeping consent conditions in the same system as the turbine and grid evidence means final acceptance is not held six months by two undischarged conditions, and the operating team inherits a live obligations register instead of a box of consultant reports.

    The turbine dossier

The scope is smaller than offshore, but the same record set still has to close before a turbine earns its certificate.

Onshore turbines trade vessel logistics for road transport and civil works, but the commissioning evidence a lender or owner expects is unchanged. Deskely holds each turbine's record set against its position, so a met mast, a substation and a hundred pads roll up into one readiness view.

Foundation and tower bolt tensioning record

Foundation-to-tower and tower-section connections were tensioned to the specified sequence and value.

During tower erection on each pad.

    Blade root bolt tensioning record

Blade root bolts met the specified tension pattern before the crane released the blade.

During blade installation on each turbine.

Underground cable pull-in and termination record

The turbine's grid connection cable was pulled and terminated to the cable schedule between pad and substation.

    During balance-of-plant cable installation.

HV withstand test and cable TDR baseline

The turbine and feeder cable insulation withstands the specified test voltage, with a reflectometry trace recorded as the reference.

Before the feeder is permitted to energise.

    SCADA point-to-point verification

Turbine control and status signals reach the site SCADA and, where required, the grid operator's system correctly mapped.

During commissioning, ahead of remote handover.

Turbine taking-over certificate with punch carried at takeover

The mechanical, electrical and commissioning record set for the turbine is signed, with any residual punch listed against an owner.

At transfer of the turbine from contractor to owner.

    How it runs

From civils to an energised site.

Onshore projects benefit most from structure set up before the first foundation, because the team is small and the date is fixed.
