Intake, pretreatment, RO trains and remineralisation, proven to permeate quality

Commissioning software for desalination plants where high-pressure pumps, membrane trains and energy recovery devices all have to prove out before permeate meets specification.

A reverse osmosis desalination plant is a chain of high-consequence stages — seawater or brackish intake, pretreatment filtration, high-pressure feed pumps, membrane trains with energy recovery devices, and post-treatment remineralisation — where a single misaligned pressure vessel or uncommissioned dosing skid can compromise permeate quality across the whole train. Deskely holds every pump, vessel, membrane skid and analyser in one register with the wet-test and permeate-quality gates built in.

    The problem

A desalination train is dozens of pressure vessels in series, and a spreadsheet cannot show which one is degrading the permeate before it is too late.

A desalination plant is seawater intake screens, pretreatment filters or ultrafiltration racks, high-pressure feed pumps, racks of pressure vessels holding hundreds of membrane elements each, and energy recovery devices, each supplied and commissioned by a different specialist contractor.

When pretreatment turbidity records, high-pressure pump test data and membrane array performance sit in separate vendor spreadsheets, nobody can confirm before the performance test whether a drop in permeate quality traces to fouled pretreatment or a leaking membrane element.

Deskely tags every pressure vessel, high-pressure pump and energy recovery device individually, so permeate quality issues are traced to the specific rack and stage rather than investigated across the whole train.

    Setting up the register

Intake, pretreatment, RO racks and ERDs are tagged assets matched to the process flow diagram.

P&IDs, membrane array configuration drawings and equipment lists are parsed into a reviewed register, so every pressure vessel, high-pressure pump and energy recovery device carries its rack number and its OEM specification from day one.

Dry commissioning checklists, hydrotest records and membrane wet-out and integrity test templates are defined once per equipment type and instantiated across every rack, whether the plant has ten pressure vessels or a thousand.

Chemical dosing for antiscalant, coagulant and post-treatment remineralisation sits in the same register as the mechanical plant, so permeate quality is derived from the same evidence set as pump and membrane commissioning.

    Execution

Pretreatment, high-pressure testing and membrane proving are gated rack by rack before permeate is accepted.

Pretreatment filters and ultrafiltration racks are proven for turbidity and silt density index performance before feedwater is allowed to the high-pressure section, protecting the membranes from an avoidable fouling event.

High-pressure pumps and energy recovery devices are hydrotested and performance-tested against their duty curve, while membrane racks undergo integrity testing and salt rejection proving before being released to continuous production.

Vendor punch from the membrane supplier, the pump OEM and the ERD manufacturer is logged at the specific rack or unit, so a handful of open items on one train does not block acceptance of the rest of the plant.

    Performance test and handover

The performance test is passed on signed permeate data, not on a vendor's guarantee that the train will settle in over time.

The contractual performance test — permeate flow, salt rejection and specific energy consumption against the guarantee — draws on the same pump, membrane and dosing records built during commissioning, so the test evidence is an export rather than a fresh exercise.

The handover pack for the plant operator includes as-built membrane array configurations, pump curves and dosing calibration records keyed to the rack register, giving operations the same data the performance test relied on.

Every signature carries a name, role and timestamp, which is what the asset owner and the water utility's independent engineer expect before the plant is accepted rather than provisionally operated.

    The dossier

Evidence that a membrane train meets permeate specification, not just pressure.

Desalination commissioning lives or dies on membrane integrity and energy recovery performance. The dossier has to separate mechanical proving of the high-pressure pumps from the membrane-specific tests a warranty claim or performance test will demand later.

Pretreatment SDI and turbidity acceptance record

Feedwater fouling index and turbidity are within the limit the membrane manufacturer sets before RO trains are fed.

Verified before first introduction of feedwater to any RO train.

    Membrane integrity test certificate

Each pressure vessel and its membrane elements pass integrity testing with no detectable breach or bypass.

Performed at first fill and repeated after any element change.

High-pressure pump and energy recovery device proving record

High-pressure feed pumps and the energy recovery device achieve design flow, pressure and specific energy consumption.

Captured during wet commissioning of the high-pressure stage.

Permeate quality and salt rejection log

Permeate conductivity and salt rejection rate meet the specified percentage across the tested flux range.

Logged continuously through membrane train start-up and ramp-up.

    Remineralisation and post-treatment dosing record

Lime, CO2 or equivalent dosing restores product water to the target hardness and pH before distribution.

Completed during wet commissioning of the remineralisation stage.

    Performance test certificate

The plant sustains contracted capacity, recovery rate and specific energy consumption over the guarantee test period.

Signed at the end of the contractual performance test, ahead of taking-over.

    How it runs

From intake commissioning to the performance test.

Desalination programmes reward a register that treats every pressure vessel and pump as its own asset, because a single fouled rack can quietly degrade permeate quality across the whole train.
