Pump and compressor symbols
Rotating equipment symbols show machines that move liquids and gases: pumps, compressors, fans and turbines. Most are drawn around a circle, with the inside and the nozzles showing the type.
- Centrifugal pumpA centrifugal pump moves liquid with a spinning impeller that throws it outwards into the casing.
- Positive displacement pumpA positive displacement pump traps a fixed volume of liquid and pushes it out, so its flow barely changes with pressure.
- Gear pumpA gear pump is a rotary positive displacement pump that moves liquid between the teeth of two meshing gears.
- Screw pumpA screw pump moves liquid along the threads of one or more rotating screws.
- Centrifugal compressorA centrifugal compressor raises the pressure of a gas with high-speed impellers.
- Reciprocating compressorA reciprocating compressor compresses gas with pistons in cylinders.
- Fan or blowerA fan or blower moves large volumes of air or gas at low pressure rise.
- TurbineA turbine takes energy out of an expanding gas or steam to drive a compressor, pump or generator.
- AgitatorAn agitator mixes the contents of a vessel or tank with an impeller on a shaft driven by a motor.

Pumps usually carry a tag starting with P, compressors with K or C, and drivers such as motors and turbines are shown or listed alongside. Spare pumps are often drawn as a pair, for example P-101A and P-101B.
The cards at the top use the forms of US legend sheets (PIP PIC001 practice). The grids below them show the same symbols as ISO 10628-2 or IEC 62424 draw them. See ISA vs ISO P&ID symbols for the differences.
Frequently asked questions
What are pump and compressor symbols on a P&ID?
Rotating equipment symbols show machines that move liquids and gases: pumps, compressors, fans and turbines. Most are drawn around a circle, with the inside and the nozzles showing the type.
How many pump and compressor symbols are there?
This legend covers the 9 most common ones: centrifugal pump, positive displacement pump, gear pump, screw pump, centrifugal compressor, reciprocating compressor, fan or blower, turbine, agitator. Project legends may add company-specific variants.
Can I download these symbols?
Yes. Each symbol page has a free SVG and PNG, and the whole legend is available as a printable PDF chart on the P&ID symbols page.
