Busbar and connection symbols

The lines on a one-line diagram are the conductors. A heavy line is a busbar, a dot is a connection, and lines that cross without a dot are not connected.

SymbolANSI / IEEEIEC 60617What it is
BusbarA busbar is the common conductor in a switchboard that all incomers and feeders connect to.
ConnectionA dot where lines meet shows that they are connected.
Crossing, not connectedTwo lines that cross without a dot are not connected.

Busbars and connections: ANSI and IEC

Busbars, connection dots and crossings are drawn the same way in both standards, which is why they are easy to read on any one-line. A heavy line is a busbar, a dot joins two conductors, and a crossing without a dot is not a connection.

On older US drawings a crossing may have a small hop where one line jumps over the other. On CAD drawings a plain crossing is the norm.

Frequently asked questions

This legend covers busbar, connection, crossing, not connected. Project legends may add more.

Are these symbols different in IEC and ANSI?

1 of the 3 are drawn differently. Each symbol page shows both forms side by side.

Can I download these symbols?
