Groove weld symbols
Groove welds (butt welds in ISO terms) join parts edge to edge, usually after the edges are prepared. The symbol shows the shape of the preparation: square, V, bevel, U, J or flare.
Groove welds: AWS and ISO
The groove symbols themselves look the same in AWS A2.4 and ISO 2553. What differs is where they sit. AWS puts an arrow side weld below the reference line; ISO 2553 system A puts it on the solid line and adds a dashed line for the other side. The bevel and J symbols always draw the straight leg on the left, whichever member is prepared.
A weld on both sides doubles the symbol: a double V (an X in ISO terms) or a double bevel (a K). For a symmetrical weld ISO leaves out the dashed line.
