Gate valve symbol

Also called Isolation valve, Block valve

A gate valve opens and closes by lifting a flat gate out of the flow path. It is used for full isolation, either fully open or fully closed, and is not meant for throttling.

What the gate valve symbol means

A gate valve opens and closes by lifting a flat gate out of the flow path. It is used for full isolation, either fully open or fully closed, and is not meant for throttling.

How it is drawn

Two triangles drawn in the line, meeting at their points, with nothing inside. This plain "bowtie" is the base body for most other valve symbols.

Variants

  • Filled solid black: normally closed
  • With a handwheel or actuator drawn on top

US legend (PIP PIC001)

Drawn as on most US-style legend sheets.

ISO 10628-2X8074

Valve, gate type. ISO adds a short bar across the centre. A plain two-triangle body is the general valve, 2101.

ISO SVG

German (DIN): Absperrschieber. See DIN P&ID symbols.

Where you see it on a P&ID

On isolation points around equipment, at battery limits, and on block-and-bleed arrangements around control valves and instruments.

Tag codes

The gate valve is commonly tagged:

  • HV (hand valve)
  • often numbered by line

Tag formats follow the project numbering procedure. For instruments, the letters follow ISA 5.1, explained on the instrument symbols page.

Frequently asked questions

What does the gate valve symbol look like on a P&ID?

Two triangles drawn in the line, meeting at their points, with nothing inside. This plain "bowtie" is the base body for most other valve symbols.

What is a gate valve used for?

A gate valve opens and closes by lifting a flat gate out of the flow path. It is used for full isolation, either fully open or fully closed, and is not meant for throttling. You will find it on isolation points around equipment, at battery limits, and on block-and-bleed arrangements around control valves and instruments.

What tag does a gate valve have?

It is commonly tagged HV (hand valve), often numbered by line. The exact tag format comes from the project numbering procedure and the legend sheets.

Is the gate valve symbol the same in ISA and ISO?

No. ISO adds a short bar across the centre. A plain two-triangle body is the general valve, 2101. The ISO 10628-2 registration number is X8074. Always check the legend sheets at the front of the P&ID set.

What is the gate valve called in German?

Absperrschieber. On a German R&I-Fließschema it is drawn to DIN EN ISO 10628-2.
