PIP P&ID symbols (PIC001)
PIP PIC001 is the Process Industry Practices document for P&IDs. It sets what a P&ID must contain and how it is drawn: symbols for piping, equipment and basic instrumentation, plus the rules for format, tagging and numbering. Its instrument symbols follow ISA 5.1. It is common on US owner and EPC projects and on legends derived from them.

Piping and fittings PIP PIC001
About piping and fittingsWhat PIC001 sets out
PIC001 is a practice, not only a symbol sheet. It is written for the designers preparing P&IDs across the life of a facility: design, construction, operation and maintenance. It applies to new P&IDs, including those supplied by package vendors.
- The sheet format and the legend sheets.
- Symbols for equipment, valves, piping and fittings.
- Instrument symbols and tags, by reference to ISA 5.1.
- Line numbering, equipment tagging and line weights.
- What information belongs on the P&ID and what belongs elsewhere.
Drafting dimensions are in US customary units, with line weights given in metric. The practice is not tied to any CAD system.
The US legend
The legend on this page shows the forms used on most US-style legend sheets, the convention PIC001 is built on: a plain two-triangle body for a gate valve, a dome actuator for a control valve, a circle with a tangential outlet for a centrifugal pump, ISA bubbles for instruments.
PIC001 itself is a licensed PIP document, and every project issues its own legend. Use the legend sheets of the P&ID set as the final word.
PIP compared with ISO 10628
The biggest differences between a US legend and an ISO legend are in valves and rotating equipment. ISO puts a bar in the gate valve, a dot on the check valve and an arrow through the control valve, and draws pumps as a circle with a chevron. See the ISA vs ISO comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is PIP PIC001?
PIP PIC001, Piping and Instrumentation Diagram Documentation Criteria, is a Process Industry Practices document that sets the format and content of P&IDs, including symbols for piping, equipment and instrumentation. The latest revision is from March 2018.
Does PIP PIC001 use ISA 5.1?
Yes. PIC001 uses ISA 5.1 for instrument symbols and identification letters, and adds its own symbols for equipment, valves and piping.
Who uses PIP standards?
PIP practices are developed by owner and engineering companies in the process industries and are widely used on US projects, in oil and gas, chemicals, power, pulp and paper and pharmaceuticals.
Where can I get PIP PIC001?
From Process Industry Practices, which publishes and licenses its practices.
The symbols on this page were drawn by Deskely to the forms of the standard and are free to use. Standards are revised and every project issues its own legend sheets, which take precedence.
