Valve symbols on piping isometrics

Valves on an isometric use the same bodies as on a P&ID, with their end connections drawn: flanges, weld dots or threaded marks. The stem shows which way the handwheel or actuator points.

SymbolIsometricWhat it is
Gate valveA gate valve opens or closes the line fully.
Globe valveA globe valve regulates flow.
Ball valveA ball valve opens or closes with a quarter turn of a ball with a hole through it.
Check valveA check valve lets fluid flow one way only.
Butterfly valveA butterfly valve turns a disc in the flow to open, close or throttle the line.
Control valveA control valve has an actuator on its stem and is moved by the control system.
Relief valveA relief valve opens at its set pressure to protect the line or equipment.

Valves

The valve tag, size and rating come from the P&ID and the line list; the isometric adds where the valve sits, which way it faces and how it is connected. See the P&ID valve symbols for the same bodies on a P&ID.

Check valves and control valves are directional, so the flow arrow on the line matters when they are installed.
