ISO 6412 and piping isometric symbols

ISO 6412 is the international standard for the simplified representation of pipelines on drawings. Part 2 covers isometric projection. In practice most isometrics are generated from the 3D model, with symbols set by the software and the project, so the common forms are shown below.

Part 1
ISO 6412-1, Simplified representation of pipelines, Part 1: General rules and orthogonal representation
Part 2
ISO 6412-2, Simplified representation of pipelines, Part 2: Isometric projection
Current edition of part 2
ISO 6412-2:2017, published in Europe as EN ISO 6412-2:2018
What part 2 covers
Coordinates and line conventions, legs off the main axes, dimensions, bends, levels, slopes, and graphical symbols for valves, cones, supports and hangers, crossings, permanent junctions, connections and flanges

Standard and practice

ISO 6412-2 gives the rules for drawing a pipeline in isometric projection. On most capital projects the isometrics are produced by isometric software from the 3D model, and the symbols, the bill of materials layout and the title block are set in the project configuration. The legend sheet of the isometric set is the final word.

The symbols on this page are drawn in the forms most common on industrial isometrics. See how to read a piping isometric for the reading order.

Frequently asked questions

What is ISO 6412?

The international standard for the simplified representation of pipelines on technical drawings. Part 1 covers general rules and orthogonal views, part 2 isometric projection.

Do all projects use the same isometric symbols?

The common symbols, such as weld dots, flanges and valve bodies, are widely shared. Field welds, supports and annotations vary between projects and software, so always check the legend.
