IEC 60617 single line diagram symbols
IEC 60617 is the international library of graphical symbols for electrical diagrams. It is used for single line diagrams in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and on most international projects. Every symbol has an identity number, such as S00287 for a circuit breaker.

- IEC 60617, Graphical symbols for diagrams
- Form
- An online database maintained by IEC (IEC 60617 DB), which replaced the printed parts 2 to 13
- Symbol numbers
- Each symbol has an identity number, S00001 onwards. Switchgear symbols were earlier published in IEC 60617-7
- National versions
- EN 60617 in Europe, DIN EN 60617 in Germany, and equivalents in many national standards
- Device names
- Protective functions are written as quantity and limit, for example I> or U<, rather than ANSI numbers

About loads and power electronicsHow IEC builds switching device symbols
IEC draws every switching device as a switch blade and adds a mark at the fixed contact for what the device can do. Learn the marks and you can read any IEC one-line:
| Mark at the contact | Function | IEC number | Device |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross (x) | Circuit breaker function | S00219 | Circuit breaker, S00287 |
| Short bar | Disconnector function | S00220 | Disconnector, S00288 |
| Bar and switch mark | Switch-disconnector function | S00221 | Load break switch, S00290 |
| Half circle | Contactor function | S00218 | Contactor, S00284 |
| Small square on the blade | Automatic tripping function | S00222 | Switch-disconnector with automatic release, S00291 |
Protection on IEC drawings
IEC draws a measuring relay as a box (S00327) with the quantity and its limit inside: I> for overcurrent, I>> for high-set overcurrent, U< for undervoltage, Id> for differential. The ANSI device numbers page lists the IEC equivalent of each ANSI number where there is a common one.
Frequently asked questions
What is IEC 60617?
IEC 60617, Graphical symbols for diagrams, is the IEC library of electrical symbols. It is maintained as an online database in which every symbol has an identity number such as S00287.
How is a circuit breaker drawn in IEC 60617?
As a switch with a cross at the fixed contact, symbol S00287. The cross is the circuit breaker function, S00219.
What is the difference between a disconnector and a circuit breaker symbol in IEC?
Both are a switch blade. The circuit breaker has a cross at the fixed contact (S00287); the disconnector has a short bar (S00288).
Which transformer symbol does IEC use on single line diagrams?
Two overlapping circles, S00841 (form 1). The coil form is S00842.
